Practicing the “art” of sitting

The most fun you can have with your kids is simple

Just sit down on the floor and let them come to you.

My two daughters have a sixth sense to know when “dad sits on the floor.” Because the moment I do they come sprinting to tackle me, jump on my back, ask me to throw them on the pillows, wrestle, lifting them up over me, holding them, or if they simply want to sit on my lap.

Kids just want us to be still long enough for them to connect with us and be close. Just like our Heavenly Father, He says", “BE STILL, and know that I am Lord.

Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

We are way to busy cleaning, cooking dinner, looking at our phones, doing laundry, etc. Clearly, those things need to get done but when your children are following you around asking for “uppy’s” that is a sign you are moving too much and need to be still with them. Next time you hear “uppy’s” that is God telling you to STOP and SIT DOWN with your kids. It doesn’t have to be long, just be obedient to what God is saying to you through your child.

Jesus said it best…

Luke 10:38-42

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Be like Mary at the feet of Jesus and your kids will adore you for it. Too often as parents, we become Martha in the day-to-day. Remember what I said earlier, if your kids are following you around the house asking to be picked up or holding onto you, instead of seeing it as a disruption to your plans, think of it as Jesus trying to say, “Be Still and spend some quality time with your kids.” It’s not a disruption if it is God telling you to take a break. That’s called a “nudge.” Change your mindset.

So if you want the best hack to being a great parent, being super connected with your kids, and having a ton of fun, I say this with all the personal experience and love I can muster for you….

When you are with your kids, sit the f**k down once and while. ^_^
