You Are the Salt of the Earth Like You've Never Known

Matthew 5:13

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.“ You’ll often hear Pastors talking about the typical aspects of salt many of us already know. It preserves, it adds flavor, it cleanses, etc... We might call these the gentle attributes of salt. However, Jesus wasn’t talking about typical table Salt. No way, bro!

Jesus was talking about Dead Sea salt because it was cultivated and so widely used throughout Judea during his time and we also know Jesus used aspects of daily life to teach.

The Bedouin tribes that wandered these areas used earthen ovens to cook most of their food, especially types of homemade flatbreads. As the women were often cooking and tending their fires for the ovens. When the heat of the fire began to lessen, these ladies would take a pinch of Dead Sea salt and throw it into the flames, igniting the flame, and causing combustion to bring the fire back to life. But how?

Just a little salt from the Dead Sea provides ample amounts of magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride, and bromides. If you remember Chemistry class, magnesium is highly flammable!

The story of Jesus Christ is a story of death and resurrection. The majority of the stories in the Bible have to do with bringing something or someone who was once “dead” back to life. Just like the flame in the Earth oven being ignited by the magnesium in the Dead Sea salt, we are to be the igniter, the catalyst to ignite the Gospel — the gasoline that is to be poured on the flame of the Church, our community, our workplace, and our home life. Everyone has a little flame within them waiting to be ignited by your testimony of resurrection in Jesus.

Don’t settle for being anything less than Dead Sea salt. Because only the enemy would have you believe you are less than the full potential of what God created you to be! Ignite the flame and never let it go out.

Go Forth. Keep Watch!
